tipto-extension Privacy Policy

Effective date: October 12, 2026

Tipto desktop and website privacy policy

tipto-extension is a local-first browser extension that lets a user save readable webpages to the tipto desktop application running on the same computer and highlight saved pages in Chrome.

Information handled by the extension

The extension handles the following information to save pages and show their highlights:

  • The URL, title, and same-origin canonical URL of visited HTTP or HTTPS pages, so it can check whether a page has been saved in tipto and display its highlights.
  • Readable text, article metadata, links, and up to 20 accessible public article images referenced by a page when the user saves it or checks a previously saved page for changes.
  • Highlights and notes the user creates or edits on saved pages.
  • An optional tipto authentication token and optional loopback server address entered by the user.
  • Local capture receipts containing page URLs, titles, identifiers, and content hashes, plus cached highlights and pending highlight edits, so saved-page status and highlights remain available while the desktop application is offline.

The extension does not collect analytics, advertising identifiers, financial information, health information, form contents, or passwords from webpages. It does not sell user data or use it for advertising, creditworthiness, or any purpose unrelated to saving and highlighting pages in tipto.

How information is used and transmitted

The extension reads page content when the user chooses Save to tipto or Save new version. It sanitizes and packages the readable article in the browser, then sends it only to a verified tipto service on the local computer (localhost, 127.0.0.1, or ::1). It does not send captured content to the developer or to a developer-operated cloud service.

When the user opens the popup on a page that is already saved in tipto, the extension also reads that page the same way, including requests for its accessible public article images, to compare it with the saved copy and offer Save new version if it changed. This comparison happens in the browser: the page content and images are not uploaded or stored unless the user then chooses Save new version.

As HTTP or HTTPS pages load or become active, the extension sends their URLs to the local tipto service to check saved-page status and retrieve highlights. It does not send those URLs to a developer-operated cloud service. Choosing Open in tipto sends only the saved item's identifier to the local service. When saving or comparing a page, the extension requests only accessible public article images referenced by that page and does not attach the user's website credentials. Images that cannot be accessed remain as their original web URLs.

On saved pages, the extension displays highlights from the local tipto service. Highlight edits and notes are sent to that service; edits made while it is offline are stored locally and synced later.

The optional authentication token, server setting, capture receipts, pairing state, and cached highlights remain in chrome.storage.local on the user's device. They are not stored with Chrome Sync.

Sharing and retention

The developer does not receive or share the information handled by the extension. Captured pages are retained by the user's local tipto desktop application until the user deletes them. Extension settings, cached receipts, and highlights remain in Chrome's local extension storage until the user changes them, clears the extension's data, or uninstalls the extension.

Security and limited use

The extension has host access to HTTP and HTTPS pages so its packaged content script can check saved-page status and display highlights as pages load. It also connects to the tipto service on the same computer and fetches accessible public article images when saving or comparing a page. It extracts readable page content for a save or change check only after the user opens the popup or chooses to save. Server responses and captured markup are validated before storage and display. The extension's use of information complies with the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.

User choices

Capturing a page is always initiated by the user. A changed page is saved as a new version only when the user chooses Save new version; the earlier copy and its highlights are kept. Users can delete captured pages and highlights in tipto, clear extension data in Chrome, or uninstall the extension at any time.
